I have not heard of one singer/songwriter who has not referred their earliest experience with music being gospel of some sort. I know that I used to hear Tennessee Ernie Ford and the Carter Family sin

I can't say that gospel was an early influence of mine - I grew up listening to musicals (The Sound of Music is one of the first music memories I have)... my aunt was a singer/performer in small theater shows and I remember she had a great voice... she and my mom would often watch Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals on TV... and we always had the radio on while I was growing up, but it was usually pop or country... I didn't even discover the Carter family until I was out of college. :)
